Questions and Answers with Carmen

Q: How long have you been practicing Taekwondo?

A: Since I was 8 years old- Nearly 14 years!!!!!!!!! TOOOO LONG!!!!

Q: What do you love most about Taekwondo?

A: Fighting! Travelling and ....FIGHTING!! Not Fitness... definitely not fitness.

Q: How long have you been involved in competitive sparring?

A: Since I was 14 when I made my first national team. Since then I have been training Taekwondo 3-4 days a week at Melbourne Taekwondo Centre and over the last 4 years I have been training my strength and conditioning at Pinewood Fitness Centre in Blackburn.

Q: Career Highlights?

A: Winning a silver medal at the 2002 World Cup and winning the bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships in Spain.

One of my most valued career highlights however, would definitely be preparing for the World Championships in Spain with my sister Caroline and great friends Stephanie Ng, Jake Ryan and Daniel Jukic- who also made the team. Our coaches Alf, Andy, Lydia, Bernie and Mr Rozinszky trained and supported us with everything. It is one of my most treasured memories.

Q: Who are your heroes?

A: My parents, my family, my club.

When I was younger my father/mentor Andrew Marton would push me to train extra sessions at home, on the nights I didn’t have training. He would be so determined on perfecting my technique, even though I wasn’t naturally flexible and it seemed like I had ‘unusual’ hip movements- he encouraged me to find a way to score effectively according to my body type. He gave me such a good base- a gift I truly value these days!

Q: What is your personal ambition?

A: To be selected for the 2008 Olympics, perform the best I can and credit it all to those who undoubtedly put in all the hard work over the years- my family and club Melbourne Taekwondo Centre!!!!!!!!!

Q: What is your Favourite Quote?

A: "Too bad, so sad said the duck" - Alf Dell'orso

I love it- it does and doesn't really make sense- depending on how it's used
