Martial Arts

The martial art of Taekwondo is based on over 4000 years of tradition and learning and is designed to present the prospective student with a series of achievable goals as they progress in their learning.  This is accomplished through a system of coloured belts.  All new students begin with a white belt.

New students begin by learning the basic skills, which will become the foundation for their future development.  Once they have learned these skills to the satisfaction of their instructor, the students will be allowed to go for their first ‘grading’ in which they will be tested on the skills they have learned.  On passing this first grading they will be awarded with Belt with 1 stripe.  They will then be taught more advanced skills, building on those that they have already learned, until they are ready for their next grading.  So this process repeats as they progress through the grading levels to Black Belt.

Each grading requires a variety of skills to be learned; a poomse (pattern), some hand and foot techniques, some self-defence skills, some free fighting skills, some Korean terminology, rules of etiquette and club history.  All of these skills and knowledge are necessary for the full development of each student.

We have observed that as students learn these new skills and progress through the rankings, they become more confident and the positive reinforcement of their instructors helps build their self-esteem.

Self Defence

We at M.T.C. are committed to providing all students with quality, useful training, which can be used as a means of defending one’s self. At every grading level, students at the Melbourne Taekwondo Centre are required to learn Self Defence!

At the lower and intermediate levels, the focus is on learning basic strategies for avoiding trouble or extracting one’s self from threatening situations.  We also teach simple but effective techniques for defending against and escaping from a variety of physical attack scenarios.

As students progress through the grading levels, they go on to learn more advanced strategies and techniques for situations involving more than one attacker and defence against various weapons, including throws, take-downs and submission holds.

At all levels, the emphasis is on practicality, simplicity and effectiveness.
